“Sassy” got her sail…!

At the onset of every season, installing the mainsail in Sassy’s 3-spar rigging is always a bit of a challenge. Below are, as I recall them, the steps I was able to complete this morning – while Bob VA3QV with his FT-817, his W3EDP antenna and his Nue-PSK digital modem logged PSK QSOs from a pic-nic table nearby the marina (https://va3qv.wordpress.com/2016/05/20/well-i-gotta-re-charge-the-battery/) – Glad that you were able make those contacts, Bob. I much appreciated your coming along for the 32 Km round-trip to the marina in the ever present Ottawa rush-hour:

  • Attach the Windex at the top of the mast
  • Remove the sail from the bag and place the three battens inside the pockets at the leech of the sail
  • Undo all lines that may have held the rigging together during storage
  • The screws and pressure nuts at the hinge of the mast must be unscrewed and the mast must be resting sideways on the mast stub at the front and the gallows at the rear
  • Open the pin that will be holding the tack of the sail to the front end of the boom)
  • Open the pin that will hold the front end of the gaff to the gaff gooseneck
  • Make sure that all lines lay starboard to the rigging
  • Ease the bolted rope of the top portion of the luff inside the slot along the bottom of the gaff
  • Place each slugs holding the lower portion of the luff inside the track aft the bottom stub of the mast and insert next the gooseneck piece of the gaff on top of the slugs
  • Ease the bolted rope along the foot of the sail inside the slot along the top of the boom
  • Check for twists in the sail and snugs in the lines
  • Attach the front end of the boom to the gooseneck
  • Put in place the pin holding the tack of the sail to the front of the boom
  • Put in place the pin holding the mid portion of the luff to the front of the gaff
  • Loosely attach the head of the sail to the aft end of the gaff
  • Loosely attach the clew of the sail to the aft end of the boom
  • Loosely place in position the bolts and pressure nuts of the mast hinge
  • Loosen all lines, including the topping lift, any downhaul and the mainsheet
  • Hoist and secure the mast upright
  • Carefully, partially hoist the sail checking for snugs and twists
  • Bring the sail down
  • Tighten the screws and nuts at the hinge
  • Fasten the clew of the sail to the end of the boom
  • Fasten the head of the sail to the end of the gaff
  • Rig the tack and clue reefing lines
  • Hoist the sail fully. Check any downhaul that needs to be rigged
  • Check the anchor light and the masthead light
  • Douse the sail, fold it or roll it on the boom and put in place the sail cover
  • Snug all lines
  • Ready for the first sail of the season…!
